The Philips PET710 7″ Widescreen Portable DVD Player features a 7 inch widescreen TFT-LCD display. Its single disc capacity and compact size makes it fully portable, perfect for taking in the car or on the airplane. It has also been engineered to play a variety of formats, including DVD movies, CD audio, DVD+R/RW, VCD, SVCD, CD-R/RW, MP3, and JPEG (Picture CD), all with full front panel operation.

This little player has many of the features of full size DVD players and CD players, and some features that they do not such as multi angle viewing. Multilingual support, parental controls, picture zoom, slow motion, frame advance, freeze frame and text display are all available. When it plays CDs you can enjoy random play, repeat play and resume play. It does have an RCA, composite video outputs and a line-out audio, or mini to RCA with digital coaxial for audio output. The LCD screen has a pixel resolution of 480 x 234 so you have a very clean, clear picture. The contrast ration is 250:1 which means that you will see even the most subtle color details and your colors won’t get washed out. The anti skip buffers that are 2 seconds for DVDs, 5 seconds for VCD and 10 seconds for audio CDs.

The sleek styling of the PET710 give it an ultra cool look. You can also view your JPEG photos from there so you can take them everywhere. However, the lack of AV inputs means that you can’t connect your digital camera to display photos. There is also no way to connect a video gaming system to this DVD player. Additionally, some users may find the battery to be a little cumbersome because it does not fit flush with the back of the player. The spinning noise is very loud and can be distracting. Finally, though, there is no resume function on this player. If you have to stop the DVD, you will lose your place. In other words, if you have to, say, visit the restroom and you don’t want to carry the player with you, then you will have to start the DVD over and find your place all over again once you are finished doing whatever you needed to do.

With that being said, the unit is very sturdy and well made and, as far as portable DVD players go, it is a great little player. You can do a lot of things with it, take it anywhere and watch and listen to just about anything that you want.
